When Alice in Chains released 'Facelift', I was 21 and by the time it hit Australian clubs, 22. I cannot begin to explain to you the power of the single 'Man in the Box'; Layne Staley's voice reached inside my gut and twisted something to make me really feel their music. They remained my favourite band from the 'grunge' genre throughout the '90s.
The wonderful vocals of Layne were lost forever in 2002 when he died from an OD of heroin and cocaine. So pointless. And now, nine years on, bassist Mike Starr has been found dead; whether this was from prescription pills or heroin is inconsequential. It's just another pointless drug-related death in the music industry.
RIP Mike Starr (April 4, 1966 – March 8, 2011)
